The key to success is often sacrifice
When Angela Loong’s mother first suggested she pick up a skill, little did she know it would mean the start of a career spanning more than 34 years; and counting.
Angela entered the beauty scene as a fresh-faced 23 years old, and having gained some experience working in various salons, opened her very own shop in 1982, which she named Bobby Pin Hair & Beauty Salon. Her first salon was located in Far East Plaza, where she stayed for more than 20 years before moving to her new location within the heartlands of Singapore at Bedok South in 2006.
But growing a business is never an easy task, and that rang true for Angela as well. One of the biggest sacrifices the intrepid beautician had to make was time – Angela’s salon demanded long hours from her, stealing precious time away from friends and family.
It was a sacrifice Angela dutifully made, and one which she recommends young entrepreneurs do as well. According to Angela, they need to be deeply involved and hands-on with their business. While it is fine to delegate responsibility to employees, they still need to provide overall input and direction.
She also warns new entrepreneurs not to rush headlong into starting their business, but to try and gain some experience in their field first so that they can figure out their customers’ needs and desires. “Without experience, you may not be able to give your customers what they want.”
Lastly, she advises patience and perseverance. Success will not come overnight, but requires determination and a can-do attitude.
While operating a business comes with its own unique challenges, what makes it worthwhile for Angela is making her clients happy. It is especially gratifying for her when she is able to provide the exact look or result her clients ask for.
In fact, Angela cites customer satisfaction as the key measure of success for herself. For her, the ultimate goal is to ensure that her customers are satisfied with her services, and that they return to her salon in the future, secure in the knowledge that she will deliver each time. Judging by her clientele, which consists mainly of regular customers, she is more than achieved the goal she set out for herself.
For now, Angela has no plans to expand Bobby Pin Hair & Beauty Salon. Instead, she is content to focus her efforts on keeping the standards high at her existing salon; a commendable aim, and one her customers are surely appreciative of.
